Metro Vancouver buildings - research file (built 2026-10-30)

21,547 rows: 18,078 strata buildings (all 21 Metro Vancouver municipalities)
plus 3,469 licensed long-term rental buildings (City of Vancouver only).

One row per strata plan or per rental-licence address. A tower complex with
several strata plans appears once per plan.

Sources and required credits

  property tax report 2026 (address, year built, zoning, assessed value),

  building names, floors, heights, addresses outside Vancouver.
  If you share this file or a database made from it, keep it under ODbL
  and credit OpenStreetMap.
- BC Address Geocoder, Open Government Licence - British Columbia
  nearest street address where no other source had one
- Wikidata (CC0) and Wikimedia Commons
  names/floors/photos for notable buildings. Each photo has its own licence
  and author in image_licence / image_credit - credit them if you reuse a photo.

Known limits
------------
- Building names: about 10% of strata rows (26% of 20+ unit buildings).
  Open data has no complete source of marketing names.
- Floors: about 21% of strata rows (41% of 20+ unit buildings).
- Rental buildings outside the City of Vancouver are not included; no open
  source lists them. BC Assessment's paid Residential Inventory does.
- strata_lots counts every strata lot, which can include commercial units
  and, in some older plans, parking or storage lots.
- first_lot_registered is NOT a reliable year built: it matched within
  2 years for only about 63% of buildings where both are known.
- Photo matches come from location: 86 rows. Look at the photo before relying
  on it; a few match a neighbouring landmark in the same outline.
- Address source "BC Address Geocoder (nearest)" is the closest known civic
  address to the building's centre, not a confirmed building address.
- year_built, zoning and assessed value exist only for the City of Vancouver.
- Rental licences held by individuals have no published address and are excluded.
